The easiest solutions are usually the best solutions. In the Business Section of last weekend’s (July 5, 2009) St. Petersburg Times Newspaper the editor challenged the readers to come up with creative ways to fix the economy (“How Would You Fix the Economy?”).

One reader submitted the following:

Dear Mr. President,

Please find below my suggestion for fixing America’s economy.

Instead of giving billions of dollars to companies that will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the following plan. You can call it the Patriotic Retirement Plan:

There are about 40 million people over 50 in the work force. Pay them $1 million apiece severance for early retirement with the following stipulations:

1. They MUST retire. Forty million job openings – Unemployment fixed.
2. They MUST buy a new American CAR. Forty million cars ordered – Auto Industry fixed.
3. They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage – Housing Crisis fixed.

It can’t get any easier than that!

P.S. If more money is needed, have all members in Congress and their constituents pay their Taxes…

With all due respect to the economic geniuses of our times and the architects of the government bailout and stimulus programs, this person nailed it squarely on the head. In fact, I dare anyone to come up with fault in his logic

When you consider the magnitude of the dollars being spent by the government for various government initiatives, a $40 billion carve-out to fund the Patriotic Retirement Plan would be a negligible drop in the proverbial bucket. Yet think of how many people would be helped, directly, dollar-for-dollar, with hardly any bureaucratic waste and how many nagging economic issues would be solved. If anyone thinks a government bureaucracy can delivery on a better idea, then I’ve got a historic bridge I would like to offer you.

Mr. President. Give us back the money which is rightfully ours and stick to maintaining our national parks, protecting us against our enemies, building roads and our infrastructure. Let us decide how we want to spend it and to whom we wish to extend our charity. And please do glance over the Constitution once in a while and remind yourself of what powers you were given and what powers are not yours to meddle with.
